    Swachh Survekshan 2025 Rankings

    The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) released the Swachh Survekshan 2025 rankings to assess urban sanitation and cleanliness across India. Ahmedabad (Gujarat) secured the top spot among cities with more than 10 lakh population in the newly introduced “Swachh Shahar” (Clean City) category.

    Key Highlights

    Million-Plus Cities (Population > 10 lakh):

    1st: Ahmedabad (Gujarat) secured 12,079 points out of 12,500.

    2nd: Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) received 12,067 points

    3rd: Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) received 12,001 points.

    Big Cities (3-10 lakh population)

    1st: Mira-Bhayandar (Maharashtra)

    2nd: Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh)

    3rd: Jamshedpur (Jharkhand)

    Medium Cities (50,000-3 lakh population)

    Dewas (Madhya Pradesh)

    Karhad (Maharashtra)

    Karnal (Haryana)

    Additional Awards & Recognitions:

    Super Swachh League: Indore, Surat, Navi Mumbai, and Vijayawada inducted for consistent excellence in cleanliness.

    Award for Best Ganga Town
     Winner: Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh)

    Runner-up: Secunderabad Cantonment (Telangana)

    Cleanest Cantonment Board: Secunderabad Cantonment, Telangana

    Best Safaimitra Surakshit Shehar Award: Given to cities ensuring safety and dignity of sanitation worker’s

    Swachh Survekshan 2025 Awards Presenter: President Droupadi Murmu

    Recognition for Uttar Pradesh:

    Agencies Recognized: Uttar Pradesh Government, Prayagraj Mela Authority, Prayagraj Municipal Corporation

    Reason: Efficient urban waste management during Maha Kumbh 2025, which saw a footfall of 66 crore people

    SSL Criteria: Cities that have ranked in the top three at least once in the last three years and remain in the top 20% of their respective population category in the current year.

    Other Notable City Performances (Million-plus category):

    Hyderabad (6th position) with 11,805 points.

    Pimpri Chinchwad (7th position) with 11,782 points.

    Pune (8th position) with 11,653 points.

    The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) secured 7,920 points (31st rank

    Mumbai managed the 33rd rank with 7,419 points.

    Bengaluru (36th rank) with 6,842 points.

    Chennai (38th rank) with 6,822 points.

    Awards Presenter:President Droupadi Murmu conferred the awards at a function in Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

    Awards Ceremony History: An annual feature since 2016, organized under the Centre’s Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban.

    Survey ScopeThe 2024-25 awards covered 4,500 cities, a significant increase from 73 urban local bodies in the 2016 exercise.

    New Initiatives Announced by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar:

    Accelerated dumpsite remediation programme: A one-year special programme starting August 15, 2025, to fast-track legacy waste remediation and unlock urban space.

    Swachh City Partnership initiative:   78 top-performing cities will mentor one poor-performing city each from their respective states, based on the principle of “each one, teach one”.
