    LGBTQIA+ stands for:

    Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and others with diverse gender identities and sexual orientations.

    Decriminalisation of Homosexuality (2018): Supreme Court in Navtej Singh Johar vs Union of India struck down Section 377 IPC, decriminalising consensual same-sex relations.

    Recognition of Transgender Identity (2014): NALSA vs Union of India judgment gave

    legal recognition to the “third gender” and upheld transgender rights.

    Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019:Law that prohibits

    discrimination against transgender persons in education, employment, healthcare, and public spaces.

    Same-Sex Marriage Not Legal Yet: In 2024, the Supreme Court declined to legalise

    same-sex marriage, leaving it to Parliament.

    Right to Equality & Dignity:Articles 14, 15, and 21 of the Constitution protect the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals against discrimination and ensure dignity.

    Social Challenges       LGBTQIA+ persons face
    stigma, family rejection, harassment, and exclusion from health, education, and jobs.

    Welfare Measures: States like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka have started transgender welfare boards, reservations, and shelters.

    Need for Reforms Civil union laws, anti-discrimination law, gender-neutral marriage and inheritance laws, and inclusive education are required for full rights
